Brushing and flossing alone are not enough to maintain healthy teeth. Eating habits also have an important effect on dental health. Certain foods should be avoided to protect the teeth. Here are some of the foods that should be avoided for better dental health:

  1. Sugary and acidic drinks: Sugary and acidic drinks may erode the enamel layer of the teeth and lead to tooth decay. For this reason, consuming carbonated drinks, fruit juice and energy drinks can be harmful to dental health. Their effects may become even worse when they are consumed with snacks at times when you do not have an opportunity to brush your teeth.
  2. Sugary foods: Sugary foods increase acid production on the teeth, which may lead to tooth decay. Avoiding or reducing sugary foods is therefore important for dental health.
  3. Crisps and crackers: Crisps and crackers may form a sticky layer on the teeth and encourage bacteria to multiply on the tooth surfaces. This may lead to tooth decay. The hardness of these foods may also damage the teeth.
  4. Sweetened yoghurt: Sweetened yoghurt contains sugar and may therefore increase acid production on the teeth and lead to tooth decay. Choosing naturally flavoured or unsweetened yoghurt instead may be better for dental health.
  5. Frozen fruit juices: Frozen fruit juices may erode the enamel layer of the teeth and cause tooth decay. The amount of sugar contained in fruit juice may also be harmful to dental health.
